Dawes Brewery
Montreal, Canada
state: Quebec
opened: 1811 closed: 1952
further information:
The Dawes Brewery was founded in 1811 by Thomas
Dawes in Lachine Quebec. Dawes became part of
National Breweries in 1909. This holding company
controlled the assets of 16 breweries in Quebec. Dawes
took over the Imperial Brewery in Montreal in 1910. The
plant was located on St. Maurice Street in Montreal and
operated as the Dawes Brewery (division of National
Breweries Ltd) until 1952. From 1939 till 1952, the
plant operated as Dawes Black Horse Brewery. Dawes
exported its Black Horse Ale into New York State from
1948 till 1952. This coaster probably dates from 1948
to 1952. The coaster may be Canadian for the Quebec
market but was likely designed for the US export market.
